“Flying Steinway” Soars Over Hamburg

It was an overcast, rainy day on April 20, 2010, when a Steinway Model D concert grand piano "took flight" over Hamburg, Germany, hoisted by Europe’s tallest crane onto the roof of the 24 story "Emporio" building. This adventure, closely coordinated between Steinway & Sons Hamburg, Union Investment, and the “Elbphilharmonie Konzerte,” was arranged to publicize the Elbphilharmonie Festival with Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say. The festival, themed “Turkish Nights,” took place in Hamburg at the end of May. The video from this unique promotion was recently made available to the public via YouTube.

In the video, Fazil Say plays his composition "Black Earth," while in the background one can see the Hamburg skyline. Famous buildings visible in the piece include St. Michaelis Church where Brahms was baptized and, beneath the distant cranes, the magnificent new form of the "Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall" (nearing completion).
