Position Summary:
The Safety Manager will develop and administer plant safety programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and corporate policies and standards. They will be responsible for fostering awareness, engagement, and accountability for safety initiatives. They will also direct plant safety activities to prevent injuries and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, reports, assessments, investigations, audits, and program implementation.
Main Responsibilities:
• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs, aligned with Steinway’s safety standards.
• Foster a proactive and positive plant safety culture by collaborating across the safety network.
• Lead safety planning at the facility, including goal setting, prioritizing facility safety needs, capital and operating expenses related to safety, and establishing adequate systems for tracking results and continuous improvement.
• Oversee the facility incident investigation process to ensure incidents are reported in a timely manner, investigations are conducted properly, root causes are identified, and corrective actions are tracked to closure.
• Ensure a proper plant injury prevention plan exists to continuously improve safety performance.
• Ensure a proper plant compliance plan exists to ensure awareness of, and good standing with, regulatory and Steinway safety requirements.
• Provide training and information to all employees as needed to satisfy regulatory and Steinway safety requirements.
• Partner with site and department leaders and employees on the implementation of safety initiatives.
• Inspect the facility to identify safety and health risks.
• Prepare and schedule training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics.
• Conduct and/or coordinate safety inspections and self-assessments to assure compliance with global safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure that material safety data sheets are maintained and readily accessible when needed.
• Maintain records of discharge or employee exposure to hazardous materials as required.
• Work with the plant team and engineering function to design, install, and maintain new or modified equipment/processes as necessary to ensure safety risks are well managed.
• Coordinate and support safety compliance activities, such as emissions control, waste disposal, etc.
• Plan, develop, deliver, and coordinate effective safety training to plant employees, temporary workers, contractors, and visitors, as necessary, to satisfy regulatory and company safety requirements and assure proper safety awareness.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications, education, and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field required; Master’s degree desirable.
• Five years of related experience preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of safety regulations and policies.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficient in technology and equipment used in safety inspections.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
• Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at a time.
